ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Gabriella Casemore’s jewellery is inspired by her fascination with the repetitive patterns found in flowers. She is also very influenced by vintage textiles and her current range was inspired by the Kimono collection at the V&A.
She designs by exploring her ideas with paper first; folding, cutting, layering, then eventually translating these ideas into highly wearable silver jewellery.
Starting with sheet silver she uses traditional jewellery-making techniques of soldering and riveting along with bending and folding to create sometimes complicated three dimensional pieces, along with more subtle delicate pieces.
The surface of the silver is then textured with various materials such as steel wire or put through a rolling mill with textured paper to give different reflective qualities, sometimes highlighted by polished edges.
Gabriella graduated from Brighton University in 1992, where she studied metals and ceramics. She taught in the Adult Education Department of Brighton’s City College for four years, and is now making jewellery full time from her workshop at Brass Monkeys in Hove.
